“It’s been a do or die mentality,” said senior Oak Grove quarterback Damon Stewart.
Stewart is right. Over the past six weeks, the Warriors have had to live by a do or die mentality and that has brought the team together, to the postseason, and now a round one win in the 6A playoffs as they defeated Ocean Springs 42-14.
Through the past six weeks, the offense has gotten better, and so has Stewart. Against Ocean Springs the Alpharetta, Georgia native threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 44 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts on his way to the Sports601 Powerade Player of the Week for the Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County area.
“I was taking what they gave me all night. We had a lot of preparation in practice for what they were going to do all week. I stuck with that and took what they gave me,” said Stewart.
“It has been a do or die mentality that we’ve had since we started 0-2 in the district. We just came out practicing much harder and getting that mentality in practice too so we won’t quit.”
Head coach Drew Causey was pleased with not only how Stewart played, but his entire team.
“I thought we performed well. Offensively we came out and scored on the third play, so we were clicking. We were able to get up 28-0 quick. Defensively, barring one or two big plays we did a great job. The only thing I didn’t like was that we had a few too many penalties. We have to fix that this week. There were a few we can fix, but there are a few just because we play aggressive on both sides of the ball. Things like false starts we have to fix.”
“Damon has played well. His confidence level has picked up. For him, it has been trying to learn us, learn his teammates a bit better, and that has helped throughout the season. He’s done a great job in that area. He’s really smart, and he’s one of those guys that can come to the sideline and explain what is and what isn’t there. He’s done a good job of developing into that general on the field,” said Causey.
Causey also talked about how Stewart has developed using his legs.
“Early in the year we would have said he had happy feet. That has settled down though because he knows he has good protection and he’s done a great job of getting things under control.”
Oak Grove will travel to Gulfport this week as they face the Admirals. This will mark the second time Oak Grove travels to Gulfport as they defeated the Admirals 37-13 in the regular season.
Congratulations to Damon Stewart, the Sports601 Powerade Player of the Week for the Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County area!
