Laurel hoops are postseason bound and playing of a Region 5-5A Tournament title Friday.

No. 3 seed Laurel opened Day 1 of the 5-5A Tournament on Tuesday with an upset win over No. 2 seed West Jones 49-46 in girls basketball. A few hours later, No. 1 seed Laurel held off No. 4 seed South Jones in boys basketball 67-52.

Both squads will face Brookhaven in the Region 5-5A Tournament Championship game Friday night. Girls game set for 7 p.m., while the boys game is set for 8:30 p.m.

The No. 1 seed Lady Panthers defeated No. 4 seed South Jones 60-23 to advance, as the No. 3 seed Panthers upset the No. 3 seed West Jones 77-66 for a spot in the boys' title game.

Consolation games are set for Friday at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Here are the Day 1 scores of the Region 5-5A Tournament and leading scorers:

Girls: No. 3 Laurel 49, No. 2 West Jones 46.

West Jones senior and Southern Miss signee Brikayla Gray led all scorers with 21 points.

Junior guard Zoey Cooley led Laurel with 20 points. Senior guard India Singleton also finished in double-digits with 15.

Boys: No. 1 Laurel 67, No. 4 South Jones 52.

Laurel senior guard Antwan Hatten led all scorers with 25 points. Ajaveon Hatten, also a senior guard, netted double-digit points with 12.

Seniors Jamari Dease and Travis Conner led South Jones with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Girls: No. 1 Brookhaven 60, No. 4 South Jones 23.

Mississippi Gulf Coast signee Ayanna McNairy and Ole Miss signee Sientianna Collins led Brookhaven with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

No South Jones player finished in double-digits in the loss.

Boys: No. 3 Brookhaven 77, No. 2 West Jones 66.

Brookhaven junior point guard La’Darius Thrasher led all scorers with 31 points.

Three West Jones players finished in double-digits. Junior Cedric Bender led the Mustangs with 17 points, while senior Re’Quan Keyes and junior Tajrick Randolph finished with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
