James Pugh

Here are your Jones, Jasper, Smith and Wayne County County Week 3 predictions as picked by James Pugh.

Laurel (2-0) at Wayne County (1-1)

This matchup was one of the most anticipated games of the regular season in Region 3-5A. But since Wayne County moved to Region 4-5A, the only hope for the rivalry to live on was for the two to meet in the playoffs - and they did in 2018.

Now, in 2019, Laurel and Wayne County have scheduled a regular-season non-region contest to keep the rivalry on-going. Laurel has won the two meetings - and after Friday night that total will be three.

Prediction: Laurel 28, Wayne County 17.

West Lauderdale 91-1) at South Jones (1-1)

South Jones made me look foolish in Week 2. Through I went 6-2 on the week, I predicted Northeast Lauderdale to rob the Braves of a victory in their home opener, 28-17. South Jones showed me otherwise, winning their first game of the season, 28-21, over the Trojans.

Another Lauderdale team, West Lauderdale, rolls into the Reservation Friday night. Last year West Lauderdale was leaps and bounds better than Northeast Lauderdale. But that was last year, and minus big playmakers West Lauderdale lost to graduation. So there’s not much of a gauge to measure Friday night’s matchup. Therefore, I’ll pick the Braves in another close one.

Prediction: South Jones 35, West Lauderdale 28.

Northeast Jones (1-1) at Raleigh (0-1)

Both teams lost big in Week 2, and both were to county rivals.

A win this Friday night will do some good to erase the bad taste left by their losses. Unfortunately, only one will have a chance to get back on the horse, so to speak, while the other keeps salting wounds.

Prediction: Raleigh 28, Northeast Jones 21.

Lumberton (1-1) at Bay Springs (2-0)

One of the better teams in 1A meets one of the better teams in 2A.

Bay Springs is a team rebuilding, yet 2-0 and showing signs of getting better. It’s hard not to give the Bulldogs a nod again, especially now that freshman running back Ty Jones is getting hard looks and offers. The 2023 RB just received an offer from Mississippi State. Friday night will be a good test to see if he can continue to live up to the hype.

Prediction: Bay Springs 20, Lumberton 6.

Other Predictions:

West Jones 35, Quitman 7.

Jefferson Davis County 27, Taylorsville 21.

Lake 17, Heidelberg 14.

Tri-County Academy 28, Sylva Bay Academy 12.

Mize 41, Wesson 21.

Enterprise 31, Stringer 12.

Wayne Academy - Bye week.
