There must be something in the Holy water at Sacred Heart Catholic.

Their girls' sports are dominating especially in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The Lady Crusader Volleyball squad defeated Stringer in three sets to zero in the MHSAA 1A south state playoffs.

Kerry Geroux is in his eighth year as head coach at Sacred Heart, and his love for volleyball is paying dividends to a special group of athletes. "I like to watch volleyball and love to watch how they do things. I give a lot of credit to the camp this past year especially. William Carey coaches came here for two days with us. It was fantastic," said Geroux.

It never hurts to work hard and become students of the game, but it also takes good talent. Geroux was pleased how the Crusaders have improved every year, and bragged about his senior leadership, "This year's seniors have been playing together for quite a while, and I think that is a key thing. I've had these seniors for four or five years now. I knew coming in we would be really good at this point. We got a really good team with really good cohesion. We have good players in the correct positions. It's a lot of fun so far."

On the flip side, the Red Devils of Stringer had never played an official volleyball game in school history before the 2020 season. Head coach Jody Rowell reflected on year one as head coach, "The first year went better than expected. We had zero volleyball players on our campus and a coach with zero experience before this year. We have a winning record and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. I consider it a great success. I'm really proud of the girls."

Sacred Heart's victory over Stringer sends the Red Devils to basketball, but there is more business to be handled by the Crusaders. There is somewhat of a volleyball rivalry that is brewing amongst the Catholic schools of 1A. They face Resurrection in the South State semifinals Tuesday night at 6 pm.

Sacred Heart will have their hands full with the Eagles from the coast. Geroux had this to say about this win-or-go-home match, "We both split 3-2 to 3-2. So it will be kind of a rubber match. It will be very exciting.
