De'Michael Harris scores the first touchdown of the evening for Southern Miss.

Homecoming was sweet for Southern Miss as they defeated North Texas 45-20. Superb performances from Jack Abraham and Quez Watkins made sure that there would not be a loss to the Mean Green like last season.

Abraham was efficient once again for the Golden Eagles, finishing 29-of-36 with three passing touchdowns for 421 yards. He also recorded a rush touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneak. That pushes Abraham to 1,936 yards on the season with 12 passing touchdowns. Watkins also had a big night, recording eight receptions for 198 yards and one touchdown.

Southern Miss started quick scoring in just 83 seconds as Abraham found De’Michael Harris for a 59-yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but Southern Miss led 6-0. A quick response from North Texas gave them the lead as Mason Fine found Jyaire Shorter on a 45-yard touchdown pass. The Mean Green’s PAT was good, giving North Texas a 7-6 lead.

Harris once again proved he has speed when he broke loose for a 60-yard rush touchdown with under one minute remaining in the first quarter. Stein’s PAT was successful, giving Southern Miss a 13-7 lead.

Southern Miss and North Texas traded passing touchdowns throughout the second quarter, with the Golden Eagles scoring on a 12-yard pass from Abraham to Jay Ladner which was his first reception of the season. North Texas two touchdowns came from Fine to Jaelon Darden from 53-yards out and Fine to Darden from two-yards out. The Golden Eagles put the last points of the half on the board as Abraham snuck it in on a one-yard quarterback sneak, giving them a 28-20 lead.

Southern Miss’ defense shined in the second half as they nearly pitched a shutout, holding the Mean Green to their 20 point total until backup quarterback Jason Bean found Dardon for a 20-yard touchdown The Golden Eagles did not slow down, scoring 17 points through the second half as Harris found the endzone from 13-yards out. That run also put him over the century mark - the first 100+ yard rusher for Southern Miss in 2019. Abraham also threw another touchdown pass, his third and final of the game to Watkins from 14-yards out. Stein also booted a 35-yard field goal.

When the final whistle sounded, Southern Miss piled up 563 yards of total offense to North Texas’ 372. The Golden Eagles move to 4-2, (2-0) while the Mean Green falls to 2-4, (1-1). Southern Miss will travel to Louisiana Tech next weekend while North Texas hosts Middle Tennessee.
