It seems fitting that on a day when America’s military and its greatest defenders were honored that the Golden Eagles defense defended their home turf. After three quarters of play, the Southern Miss defense had allowed just a 2.8 yards per play average. After four quarters, they had completed the defensive shutout to give themselves a 37-2 victory.
The Golden Eagles forced a three-and-out on the initial drive, then on the second Blazers drive, Shannon Showers came up with an errant Dylan Hopkins throw, returning the ball to the UAB 21.
Southern Miss then struck and never looked back as Steven Anderson rushed into the endzone from six-yards out to give Southern Miss the 7-0 after the successful PAT.
The Golden Eagles put more points on the board as freshman kicker Andrew Stein put the ball through the uprights from 35-yards out near the start of the second quarter.
The defense again came up with a big play as D.Q. Thomas returned an interception 55-yards to the endzone for a pick-six to give the Golden Eagles a 17-0 lead.
UAB pinned Southern Miss deep in their territory with under five minutes to go in the half and managed to get on the board as they got pressure on Jack Abraham, forcing a safety.
As time expired though, Southern Miss put together a six-play 18-yard drive to get into field goal range. Stein booted a 44-yard field goal to give Southern Miss a 20-2 lead as both teams headed to the locker rooms.
The second half was more Southern Miss dominance while Abraham connected with Quez Watkins from 20-yards out and Tim Jones from nine-yards away for touchdowns. Stein also booted another field goal from 25-yards out.
When it was all said and done, the Nasty Bunch allowed 170 total yards (103 passing, 67 rushing), while the Golden Eagles collected 325 total yards (164 passing, 161 rushing).
Southern Miss moves to 6-3 overall - sealing their bowl eligibility - and will travel to take on UTSA next week. UAB will play host to UTEP next Saturday.
