South Jones’ Reid Gavin commits to the University of South Alabama.

The three-star offensive lineman in the 2021 class announced his commitment Thursday afternoon on Twitter.

“After much prayer and thoughtful consideration, I would like to announce that I will be continuing my football and academic career at the University of South Alabama.

"Thank you God for blessing me with the ability and opportunity to continue playing the sport I love! I want to thank all of my coaches for everything they have done for me! Thank you to all of the other schools that have shown interest in me! Thanks also to my parents, sisters, family, and friends that have encouraged and pushed me to always give 100 [percent] and to always be the best player and person that I can be! I'm not finished yet!"

The 6’4, 320-pound South Jones standout chose South Alabama over offers from Southern Mississippi, Louisiana-Monroe, Western Kentucky, Samford, and Southeast Missouri State.

"They were one of my first offers," said Gavin. "They were one of the first to believe in me. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I know that right now, South Alabama is the best fit for my family and me.

“[South Alabama] is a great program with great coaches. I feel like it’s the best fit for me to succeed at the next level. It felt like home for me from the start.”

Gavin’s pledge gives South Alabama 13 total commitments in the 2021 class so far - fourth of those from offensive lineman, including two (Keshawn Moore and Quincy McGee) from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Despite restrictions placed on recruiting due to COVID-19, which hasn't allowed for on-campus visits across the nation, the three-star offensive tackle visited South Alabama before those restrictions being put in place.

“I’ve been to South Alabama several times,” Gavin said. “I’ve attended camps there and watched a few games. It’s a great place with great people.”

Gavin admits though, that such restrictions have made the recruiting process a bit harder than usual.

“I’ve wanted to visit several other places,” said Gavin, “go to other camps and learn new techniques from other coaches and see other places, but I really didn’t need to see more of South Alabama or see anybody else because for me it’s always been South Alabama.”

Gavin kicks off his senior season at South Jones on Friday, August 21 at home against Sumrall.
