Howard inks with Jones College baseball

A second South Jones baseball standout inks with Jones College just ahead of the 2019 season.

Andrew Howard signed with the Bobcats last Wednesday inside the school’s Media Center.

“I had a decision to play football and baseball,” said Howard. “I’ve always grown up watching Jones play baseball, and I’ve always wanted to be a Bobcat. Over the years, they’ve become a good baseball program that has won national championships.”

Fellow senior teammate Tyler Ducksworth signed with the Baseball Bobcats back on Nov. 1, 2018.

In 2018, as a junior, Howard batted .258 in 104 plate appearances with 24 hits and 18 runs scored. He also batted in 16 runs. South Jones finished the season 17-12 overall, 5-4 in Region 5-5A. The Braves were an out away from sweeping Hattiesburg in the third round of the playoffs but eventually lost to the 2019 Class 5A champs in the playoff series that lasted three games.

“We have some good pieces coming back,” said Howard. “We have some young guys that will need to step up, but we should be pretty good.”

Howard says his relationship with the Jones College coaches made the choice easy.

“Coach Rhodes was my recruiter,” Howard said. “He was nice. He kept in touch with me and always told me that if I needed anything he would do all he could to help. He also told me that anytime I wanted to work [on my game], he would be glad to come and help.”

South Jones begins the 2019 season on Feb. 21 against Enterprise in the West Jones Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
