ELLISVILLE – Former Jones College running back Scottie Phillips (Ellisville) has been named to two prestigious preseason college football award watch lists.
The Ole Miss senior was named to the Maxwell Award list, which goes to America's Top College Football Player of the Year since 1937. He has also been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list, which goes to the nation's top running back and is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate to within one year of other students of the same classification.
Phillips, a South Jones High School product, was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American as a freshman in 2016 with the Bobcats. He led the MACJC and was fifth nationally with 1,212 rushing yards. His average of 123.6 yards per game was second in the nation.
As a sophomore at Jones, Phillips was named All-MACJC first-team. He rushed for 1,070 yards (107.0 yards per game), which was third in the state and 12th in the nation. He rushed for 13 touchdowns (78 points), which was fourth in the state and ninth in the nation.
Last year as a junior at Ole Miss, Phillips rushed for 928 yards on 153 carries and was fifth in the SEC in total touchdowns (14) and third in rushing TDs (12).
He rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Rebels' season-opener vs. Texas Tech. He was named the SEC Player of the Week for his efforts.
Ole Miss opens the 2019 season at Memphis. Kickoff for the game is 11 a.m. and will air on ABC.
